Luminibus®

In the last few years the energy market registered an estreme price unsteadiness tending to a never-ending increase; this situation helped the energy saving topic to become one of the most important market sectors to work on.  Also according to Kyoto Protocol, many public and private organizations undertake to find solutions and many municipalities work out plans to improve the street lighting management since it is appointed to be a significant expensive task for the municipal budget although some time ago it seemed not to be targeted with tech innovations and solutions.

Nowadays new actors and technologies are proposed and, due to the subject complexity, not always the potential users such as the municipalities choose the best solution among the most advanced available.

The Luminibus® system has been designed and developed by A.P. Systems MIT division and it represents the result of over ten-year experience in developing telemetering communication systems applied to energy flux meters.    Luminibus® is the result of ad hoc skills improved in these projects and takes its place among the most advanced and liable solutions but at the same time it is one of the most simple-to-use systems available: from a simple PC it is possible to check, schedule switch on/off time and define the luminous flux intensity of each street light belonging to the street lighting plant.   Luminibus is the system by which the luminous flux is optimized and this extremely improves energy cost reducing, street light average life and maintenance scheduling.

The feature of accurate luminous flux control provides a spin-off for environment, since it helps in reducing the CO2 production and light pollution, and pedestrians’ and drivers’safety since the streets could be better illuminated in the nighttime.

The most important Luminibus® benefits are

Energy saving

It helps in reducing the power consumption up to 45% thanks to switch on/off and luminous flux schedule applied to each street light.

Maintenance optimization

Especially in the street light switch on/off crucial stage it helps in improving the performance and the lifetime reducing at the same time the risk of failure.   Moreover maintenance interventions can be timely, aimed and preventively planned thank to the huge amount of information managed by the system.

Protection of the environment

The power consumption reduction implies the reduction of carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere and this helps the local municipality in respecting the Kyoto protocol and obtaining the energy saving white certificates.

Safety

A good nighttime street lighting increases people’s confidence in safety while they walk around the town and at the same time improves the visibility conditions for drivers avoinding over-illuminating dazzle or adjoining areas of shade and over-lit-up areas.

Obviously investments are required to obtain such results but the money spent on Luminibus® is payed-back in very few time with the savings coming from power consumption reduction and maintenance optimization.

The migration to Luminibus® can be gradual and handled in lots since Luminbus® is MODULAR.  In this way the municipality can plan investments on a multi-year basis activating the system in critical areas first and extending it to the remaining later on.

Luminibus® is also based on concept that to obtain good efficiency and waste elimination different interventions are required, like the following:

  • eliminating all low-efficiency lamps; all those lamps which can transform into light only a small part of the power received and dissipate the rest into heat.  Not only the incandescent lamps but also the mercury vapour lamps belong to the “low-efficiency” category; in particular the last ones are going to run out of production since they represent high polluting refuse when discarded.  All this lamps have to be substitute with high-efficiency ones (high-pressure sodium vapours lamps, metal halid lamps, led);
  • the street light case installed up the lamppost should be built to prevent the light dispersion towards the sky and optimize irradiation towards the street;
  • timeschedules have to be applied so that streetlighting can be managed on geographical and seasonal basis.  By example, in this way during the year each geographical area can be illuminated in each decade according to a specific switch-on-time duration;
  • all the luminous flux reductions are to be applied according to the UNI10439 standard.
  • Luminibus® can assure the automatic perfomances related to predefined time schedules, switch-on programming and illuminating power per each street lamp and it offers a very high level of customizing the configuration according to the real needings as they come.

Luminibus® components...

Luminibus® is modular and can deeply apply to the customer’s needings. This is due to its components features since each of them is a high-tech performer on its specific role and employes the very best and suitable technology.

Luminibus® components are the following.

M3T : Multi Metering Management
          TERMINAL

this is the on-field device which incorporates:

  • the ballast which controls and manages the lamp supply power flux
  • the power line communication system which relates it to the system.
  • It has to be installed on each street lamp in its case, lamppost or shuntwell. Its main features are:
  • lamp failure detecting (light out, insufficient power, failure or damage of the condenser , power lack, damaged fuse, lamp exhaustion, etc);
  • command execution (automatic igniter deactivation, lamp switching on/off, luminous flux dimmer reduction, over-voltage and low-voltage control of the power and the lamp, ecc.)
  • metering data retrieving (voltage, power absorption, current absorption, power factor, choke coil temperature, power consumption, activity time, etc).

M3C : Multi Metering Management
          CONCENTRATOR

this is the concentrator to which the M3T are connected through a PLC connection.  It is installed inside the line cabinet and usually it is provided one concentrator per line.

Its main features are:

  • at predefined intervals polling the linked M3T
  • data retrieving about the operation of each street light stored in the M3T memory
  • sending to each M3T commands defined by the managing system consolle
  • system connection managing through modem (GSM, GPRS, UMTS, ect) to transfer data retrieved from each M3T and to receive operating commands as well as configuration instruction to be sent to the M3T.

M3S : Multi Metering Management
          SOFTWARE

this is the central software  which manages the whole system working through  connections to each M3C.

It can be installed at the municipality site as well as hosted in a servers farm (b.e. the A.P. Systems servers farm). In any case the municipality can use the all amount of data managed by its system.

M3S is a graphical software which represents on topical maps the single street light and concentrator to which it is connected. On this maps The system alerts about street light faults detected by the joined devices.

Each fault is stored as a database record on which many data processing can be performed and customized in order to keep under control the whole street lighting plant on diagnostic as well as consumption basis.

Through the M3S the user can define the plant switch on/off cycles making use of the astronomic clock, manage the single street light per each establishing switch on time, switch off time and luminous flux power if necessary.
